Well youtube is the most popular website on the internet and for good reason, its fucking awesome. That said Youtube has a problem, its not making money. Its burning 1 million dollars a month in bandwidth costs and doesn’t seem to be generating much ad revenue. Further more a lot of the content on Youtube is copyrighted. Now, if companies truly understood the power of free media they’d embrace Youtube. After all free mp3s have launch more than a couple bands. But given the path the RIAA and MPAA have taken in fighting online content I can only imagine the TV production companies will follow suit.

It saddens me to say it but I can only see two things for Youtube in its future, ads before videos and restriction of copyrighted content. The ads could suck but also could be done right. 15 second ads are too long in the internet age. I want instant gratification and I want it now. If Youtube can go the way of Japan with crazy 2 or 3 second Ads then they can make it work. The big killer will be restricting copyrighted content. That is the big draw of Youtube. Didn’t see the Daily Show’s headlines last night? Check it out on Youtube. Want to see whoever’s latest music video? Youtube. Its the one stop shop for all things video. Here’s hoping they figure out a solution that can avoid these problems.
